Back Pain Q & A

What could be causing my back pain?

Back pain can arise from a problem with your internal organs, for example, a kidney infection or endometriosis. However, for most people, back pain occurs because of a musculoskeletal problem.

Your spine is a column of bones (vertebrae) with a channel running through called the spinal canal. Within the spinal canal is your spinal cord, from where nerves travel outward to all parts of your body. There are ligaments and muscles surrounding and connecting the vertebrae, and between each pair of bones is a spongy disc that absorbs shock.

Damage from acute injury or gradual deterioration of any of these structures is the root cause of most back pain. Falls, sports injuries, auto accidents, and straining your back by twisting awkwardly or overstretching when lifting are the most common causes of acute back pain.

What are the most common chronic back pain conditions?

Chronic back pain is a particular problem as you age. This is due to the effects of wear-and-tear over the years and the slowing down of your body's natural repair and regeneration processes.

Some of the most common chronic back pain conditions include:

  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Facet joint arthritis
  • Bulging or herniated discs
  • Spondylosis
  • Sciatica
  • Vertebral compression fractures
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spondylolisthesis

In many cases, the reason you have back pain is radiculopathy – compression or irritation of the nerves as they exit the spinal cord.

Pressure from a bulging disc or other changes in your spine not only causes pain but could trigger numbness, "pins-and-needles" sensations, weakness, or in severe cases, loss of function.

What treatments are available for back pain?

The Stellar Pain and Spine team usually begins your back pain treatment with a program of conservative measures such as physical therapy and medication.

These treatments are often highly effective, but if your condition doesn't improve, they offer a range of minimally invasive treatments such as:

Steroid injections

Injected steroid medication has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect that can ease persistent back pain. The Stellar Pain and Spine team typically uses an injection that combines a steroid with a local anesthetic to give you a combination of short- and long-term relief.

Radiofrequency ablation

Radiofrequency ablation treatment heats the nerves in your spine that are causing your pain, temporarily destroying them.

Spinal cord stimulation

A spinal cord stimulator is an implantable device that uses electrical pulses to disrupt nerve activity.

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty

Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty involve having injections of bone cement to stabilize vertebral compression fractures. With kyphoplasty, your provider first inflates a tiny balloon in the vertebra to increase its height.
